Following the postponement of the event from March 2020 due to COVID 19, eventually we got to a date whereby all the semifinalists were able to get together. This was to be a round robin finale of shortened games to mark the finals of the event.
The
The semi-finalists were:-
Sam Howden and Alain Maillet
Angie Harrison and Dave Thomas
Coral Richards and Steve Patterson
Karen Hope and Steve Roberts (replacing the unavailable Guy Ellis Clark)
One thing captaining games has taught me is to leave making a decision on whether to play a match as late as possible and the day after Storm Arwen was no different. It was just about playable at 5pm and I guess the most important thing – it was dry – even though pretty cold and windy of course.
The The games played were very entertaining and I think everyone had fun in the end considering the conditions. A good number of spectators attended too donning their thermals to commit to the wintry conditions.
Ultimately the winners were to be determined between Angie and Dave and Sam and Alain. The consistent slicers battled through to victory but not before a very long end game with Sam and Alain eventually victorious after many deuces. Well done Sam and Alain for being unbeaten on the night!
Congratulations to all the competitors for completing the tournament in difficult cold windy conditions. Geoff would have been proud of everyone!
There was a lovely presentation of trophies and medals provided by Beryl Brown and we remembered Geoff’s previous input to the club.
Afterwards everyone was treated to lovely warming and spicy curries cooked by Adele, Steve P and Justin M-H and Beryl bought everyone a drink. It was a successful evening and Geoff would have been looking down laughing along I’m sure.
Many thanks to everyone who made the event happen and of course Beryl for her generous hospitality.
