Hoylake Men’s 1st team end of season report

HLTC

The last 2 fixtures of 2019 were never going to be easy. First, an away tie to the mighty Prenton 1st team that expectedly resulted in a 0-24 defeat. This left a nail biting finale at home in the last game of the season to championship contenders Thorndale 1st team, who were currently in 2nd position in the division, just behind Prenton. They needed an emphatic win against our boys to have a hope of toppling Prenton from taking the title yet again, thus risking Hoylake dropping into the dreaded playoff zone.

Time to enlist the Fantastic 4 to give Thorndale a good seeing to ! The evening started out with the priceless memory of Thorndale’s captain turning up and asking me where they were playing. After pointing over to the court where Mike Meagan and Chris White were warming up, he looked over in disbelief and shouted some expletives. Payback time for when Thorndale enlisted 2 of their coaches into their 2nd team a couple of seasons back, effectively relegating Hoylake to the division below. Eagerly warming up on the other court were Guy Ellice-Clark and Geoff Forster ready to take on their 2nd pairing, who also started to look a little worried.

And worried they should have been. The tie finished with a superb 20-4 victory to Hoylake, and a rise to 5th place in Division 1 and safe from relegation. The lads turned out in force to spectate and the tennis did not disappoint, noteably memorable performances by Guy and Geoff against Thorndale’s top pair.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the team’s efforts this year. Greatly appreciated. Captain signing off…
