Hoylake Men’s 1st team report after 6 matches

After 6 matches, Hoylake Men’s 1st team are in a respectable 5th place in the table just 2 points behind Neston 1st team.

Solid performances have continued with a convincing 20-4 win away to Prenton 2nd team on Sun 26th May. Chris White and Paul Cottam beating Prenton’s 1st pair 6-3, 6-1 with ‘Whitey’ putting on a display of his Jedi like skills to which the bewildered opponents had no answer. On the other court Dave Challener and Dave Cottrial doing the business finishing their match against Prenton’s 2nd pair, winning 6-3, 6-4.

After the switchover, there was no stopping Chris and Paul who overcame their frustrated opponents with a score of 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile, the two Daves engaged in an almighty battle with Prenton’s 1st pair, narrowly missing out on the win in a 3rd set tie break, finishing 4-6, 6-4, 7-10.

On Thursday 6th June Hoylake faced their biggest challenge yet, against the mighty Prenton 1st team at Hoylake, where they avenged their more junior team mates. Even with Dave Callanan drafted in, partnering Simon Birchall, they were no match for Prenton’s 1st pair who won 6-4, 6-2. Similarly on the other court, Dan Rothwell and Paul Cottam lost out 6-3, 6-1 despite a Nadal-like start by Dan in the 1st 3 games.

In the 2nd half of the tie, Dave and Simon secured a memorable victory against Prenton’s 2nd pair, playing some excellent net play, finishing 6-2, 7-5. Meanwhile, Dan and Paul slugged it out with their 1st pair, finishing with a respectable defeat 4-6, 3-6. The tie finished 18-6 to Prenton which is no mean feat against the 10 times consecutive 1st division Champions.
