Report by Liz Mason-Home
Sunday was a lovely hot day. Frank Noble was there to preside over proceedings and yes I should have asked him to write this piece too! The only thing we had to wait for were the courts, but there were some great Aegon matches going on to entertain us for 20 minutes. Better to have a busy tennis club than not busy say I.
Proceedings got under-way and it was lovely to see 8 women and 8 men ready to start dancing on court. We had some of our newer members making an appearance, Jay Durham playing with Pam Kloezeman and Karen Hope playing with Jon Miller, together with some longstanding members who have left and come back again …… welcome back Rob Crawford (with whom I recall getting to the final back in 2006 and losing to Jon’s mother!!!) It was decided, as there was a nice number of entries, to have a knockout competition with first round losers playing in a plate.
Lots of good tennis was played and the final was won by Lynda Arnold and Joe McGillivray (didn’t Linda win last year?) who narrowly beat Liz Mason-Home and the eternally youthful John O’Connell 6-5 (good handicapping Craig). The plate final was won by Gill Cottrial and the said Rob Crawford who beat Steph Singleton and Frank Birchall also 6-5. (Craig knows a bit about tennis doesn’t he?)
Hopefully everyone enjoyed the day and many thanks to all for turning up. Thanks also to Frank Noble who officiated. Trophies were presented by the Club Captain.
